Checklist

• I back up my files to iCloudDrive.
• I back up my files with Time Machine or Super Duper to an external drive.
• I know that mail messages, web pages and applications may be malicious.
• I know how to shut down properly.
• I know what an application is, and what the Finder is and how to use it.
• I know how to download and install software.
• I am using a recent supported version of Mac OS X (Sonoma or Sequoia).

• I have a strong login password on my Mac, and I have enabled FileVault.
• I have activated Find My Mac.
• I use wireless with caution. (I know that some wireless access points may be malicious.)
• I set my DNS servers for wired and wireless connections to Google Public DNS, or OpenDNS, or Quad9.

(All of these are good ideas even if you don't use a laptop.)

• I back up my files to more than one place.
• I use a hardware firewall.
• I know how to get a deleted file back using Time Machine.
• I use  ► App Store... ► Updates and  ► System Settings... ► General ► Software Update to keep Apple software up to date.
• I have installed Firefox or Chrome and customized it with add-ons, including an Ad Blocker for security.
• My Mac and its peripherals are on a surge protector or UPS.
• My everyday usage is not on an administrator account.
• My home router has a strong non-default password and cannot be administered remotely.
• My possessions are covered by insurance, and I have written down my Mac's serial number.
• I read www.macintouch.com to find out about Mac issues.
